The craft traditions of the Mediterranean are deeply embedded in the culture and history of the region. From intricate lacework to handcrafted ceramics, these artisanal practices tell stories of generations past, each piece carrying the mark of its maker. But in today’s design world, craft is no longer just about maintaining tradition; it’s about reinterpreting it for the contemporary age.
Contemporary artisans are redefining what it means to be a craftsperson. They are exploring new techniques, materials, and applications, often merging traditional skills with contemporary technology. For instance, while the craft of filigree has been passed down through Maltese generations, today’s artisans are experimenting with bolder designs, incorporating unexpected materials like resin or repurposing vintage filigree into statement jewellery pieces.
We recognise that artistic expression in craft is a powerful form of storytelling. Each piece of handmade work, whether it’s a sculpture, textile, or ceramic object, is more than just an item—it is an embodiment of the creator’s vision and the traditions that inspired it. What makes today’s crafts exciting is how they straddle the line between past and future, using contemporary techniques to bring ancient traditions into contemporary life.
Craftspeople today face the challenge of preserving the authenticity of their work while also appealing to a contemporary audience. This balance will be explored in the designMT exhibits, where visitors can witness how local artisans are blending old-world techniques with contemporary aesthetics to create pieces that resonate with today’s design sensibilities.
Through craft, we can continue to engage with our heritage in ways that feel personal and relevant, while also ensuring that these traditions are kept alive for future generations
designMT is organised by the Malta Crafts Foundation with the support of Arts Council Malta, Heritage Malta, the Industrial Property Registrations Unit, Malta Digital Innovation Authority, and Malta Tourism Authority, and in collaboration with the Golden Glitch, Kamra tal-Periti, Spazju Kreattiv, and the Valletta Cultural Agency, with Lovin Malta as Media Partners. The event unites designers, architects, and creatives to explore the blend of tradition and innovation across architecture, fashion, digital art, and more, while celebrating Malta’s cultural heritage.
