Materials are the foundation of any craft, shaping not only the final product but also the creative process itself. In the Mediterranean, crafts have long been tied to the natural materials available—wood, stone, clay, and metals, each carrying with them a deep connection to the land and culture. However, as the world moves forward, so too does the choice of materials. Today’s craftspeople are pushing boundaries by experimenting with both traditional and contemporary materials, creating works that are as much about innovation as they are about heritage.
From ceramics that blend ancient techniques with contemporary forms, to artisans who mix local limestone with metals or recycled glass, the Mediterranean’s crafts scene is evolving. Materials that were once seen as commonplace, like clay or wool, are being reinterpreted in contemporary, artistic contexts, often taking on new life through the hands of today’s designers. The careful selection of materials reflects a commitment to sustainability as well, with many artisans opting for eco-friendly or upcycled resources in their work.
At designMT, the focus will be on how materiality influences design. Exhibitors will showcase pieces that are not only beautiful but thoughtfully crafted, reflecting a deep understanding of how the choice of materials can shape a narrative. Whether it’s through the texture of a ceramic piece or the weight of a hand-forged metal sculpture, each material tells its own story, one that connects the creator to the history and future of their craft.
Crafting with purpose, materials are more than just a medium; they are a reflection of the designer’s values, creativity, and connection to the world around them. As we look to the future, materiality will continue to play a crucial role in how Mediterranean crafts evolve, blending tradition with sustainability, and craftsmanship with innovation.
designMT is organised by the Malta Crafts Foundation with the support of Arts Council Malta, Heritage Malta, the Industrial Property Registrations Unit, Malta Digital Innovation Authority, and Malta Tourism Authority, and in collaboration with the Golden Glitch, Kamra tal-Periti, Spazju Kreattiv, and the Valletta Cultural Agency, with Lovin Malta as Media Partners. The event unites designers, architects, and creatives to explore the blend of tradition and innovation across architecture, fashion, digital art, and more, while celebrating Malta’s cultural heritage.
