From 18 to 28 July 2024, Valletta will host 15 architecture students from Birzeit University, Palestine. These students, steeped in the tradition of architectural resilience and community-focused design, will bring their unique perspectives to Malta.
Rising Stars from Palestine
These students represent the innovative spirit of Birzeit University’s Architecture Department. The programme blends architectural knowledge with engineering disciplines, fostering creativity, responsibility, and community engagement. They are trained to preserve traditions while embracing contemporary challenges.
A Mediterranean Design Exchange
Through the coordination of Kamra tal-Periti and the Association of Architects of Palestine, the students will be in Malta to engage in a cross-cultural design initiative. They will set up a temporary studio to rethink Misraħ Santa Marija in Żejtun, blending Palestinian and Maltese design rationales. Guided by Maltese professionals, they will tackle this practical project, testing their creativity and technical skills.
Mark your calendars for Wednesday, 24 July at 18:30 at the Valletta Design Cluster. In this final edition of this season’s FiftySix Design Talks, the students will present their work and insights. They will explore the rich dialogue of Mediterranean architecture, showcasing how Palestinian and Maltese design philosophies intersect in their projects for Misrah Santa Marija.
FiftySix Design Talks is an exciting collaboration between The Golden Glitch and the Valletta Design Cluster. This dynamic partnership brings together artists, designers, and innovators for a series of talks that explore the intersection of tradition and modernity in design. It’s a space where time-honored crafts meet contemporary ideas, all hosted within the historic walls of Valletta.
