ORB: A Contemporary Art Piece Blending Egyptian Heritage and Mathematics

In the bustling heart of Cairo, a work of art has emerged that unites the past and present in an exquisite display of creativity. This masterpiece, known as ORB, was unveiled at the major group exhibition ‘Forever Is Now II’ in 2022 and is the brainchild of the Spanish artist SpY.

Drawing inspiration from the rich history of Egypt and the Pyramids, ORB’s shape is a nod to the hidden ‘pi’ number in the geometry of the Pyramids that has intrigued mathematicians for centuries. But this sculpture goes beyond mere mathematics, using the sphere to reflect the surrounding environment and the viewers themselves. This circular mirror evokes ancient Egyptian symbolism and creates a sense of connection between the present and the past.

The sculpture’s surface captures the Pyramids, the sky, and the viewers in a fragmented reflection, creating a breathtakingly beautiful effect that echoes notions of creation and rebirth in classic Egyptian culture. SpY collaborated with Parametric Designers Controlmad and Aman Agrawal to create the digital shape of the sculpture, drawing tangent circular plates and working with their coordinates using Rhino3D plugins, Grasshopper and Kangaroo. This collaboration between technology and art resulted in a stunning masterpiece that is as captivating as it is unique.

ORB’s beauty and significance will continue to be on display at upcoming events, including THE ART OF DISRUPTION, organised by Culturvator Art D’Égypte at The Egyptian Bureau for Cultural & Educational Affairs, London, UK. SpY’s work is not limited to this sculpture alone; rather, it seeks to understand the environment, culture, and objectives of every new project, creating a lasting conceptual and cultural legacy.
In a world that often feels disconnected and chaotic, ORB serves as a reminder of the power of art to bring people together and create a sense of belonging. SpY’s work reminds us that beauty and meaning can be found in the intersection of ancient and contemporary cultures and that this intersection can inspire us to dream about the future of humanity. As we gaze upon ORB and its mesmerising reflections, we are reminded of the beauty that can be found in the past, present, and future.
