Mediterranean design is a living testimony to centuries of craftsmanship, trade, and cultural exchange. In Malta, it tells the story of a region where design doesn’t exist in isolation but is constantly evolving, shaped by the past and adapted to meet the needs of the present. The role of today’s designers is to carry this tradition forward, finding ways to blend historical elements with contemporary aesthetics and functionality.
One remarkable aspect of this evolution is how everyday objects from the past are reimagined in contemporary design. From intricate lace patterns incorporated into fashion to stone masonry influencing new architectural concepts, Maltese artisans and designers have long shown a talent for innovation. This balance between preservation and reinvention is what makes Mediterranean design so distinctive. It is both rooted in history and responsive to the contemporary world.
We believe that this dialogue between old and new is at the core of design. Each piece of work, whether an architectural structure or a piece of jewellery, is a reflection of this tension. The upcoming designMT will explore how designers, both local and international, navigate this space between tradition and innovation. Through exhibitions, workshops, and talks, visitors will have the opportunity to see how creative processes continue to honour the past while looking firmly toward the future.
designMT will offer a unique platform for this conversation to flourish, showcasing works that range from architecture and fashion to food and digital design. In each field, we see how contemporary designers are using traditional methods and materials to create something new and relevant, ensuring that Mediterranean design remains a vital and evolving practice.

designMT is organised by the Malta Crafts Foundation with the support of Arts Council Malta, Heritage Malta, the Industrial Property Registrations Unit, Malta Digital Innovation Authority, and Malta Tourism Authority, and in collaboration with the Golden Glitch, Kamra tal-Periti, Spazju Kreattiv, and the Valletta Cultural Agency, with Lovin Malta as Media Partners. The event unites designers, architects, and creatives to explore the blend of tradition and innovation across architecture, fashion, digital art, and more, while celebrating Malta’s cultural heritage.
