Revolutionizing Design: The Circular Cities Challenge

In today’s world, our products undergo extensive journeys before reaching us. They are manufactured in large factories using materials sourced from distant places, resulting in mass-produced goods that lack personalization and disregard local resources and knowledge. But what if we could change this system? What if we could reduce the ecological footprint, democratize access to quality design, and create more opportunities for designers, makers, and manufacturers?
Enter distributed design, a groundbreaking approach that focuses on moving data rather than physical products. This innovative perspective reimagines the manufacturing process and materials used, aiming to enhance the relationship between customers and their products.
To enable data exchange and foster local regenerative economies, a powerful digital ecosystem is essential. This is where the Distributed Design Platform comes in. As a Mediterranean-based initiative, the platform empowers, connects, and supports existing platforms that facilitate global connectivity. It recognizes that while technology is crucial, it alone cannot save us. The platform believes in the socialization of technology, ensuring it benefits society as a whole. Additionally, the Distributed Design Platform offers programs to enhance designers’ skills and digital literacy, enabling them to fully utilize these platforms.
Established in 2017 and co-funded by the Creative Europe program of the European Union, the Distributed Design Platform has evolved into a dynamic hub, bringing together a diverse member base from cultural and creative institutions, Fab Labs, universities, and makerspaces. It offers Europe-wide programming and opportunities to support emerging creatives in the exciting field of Distributed Design.
Based in Barcelona, Spain, the Distributed Design Platform fosters connections and serves as a networking hub for the emerging field. Its mission is to develop and promote interconnections between designers, makers, and emerging digital and local markets.
One of the remarkable initiatives hosted by the Distributed Design Platform is the Circular Cities Challenge. Taking place from July 3rd to July 7th, 2023, this week-long program empowers 26 young creatives to ideate and prototype circular design strategies. The challenge focuses on waste material transformation in crucial design contexts provided by key stakeholders in Barcelona, including food, energy, textiles, and natural waste. Interdisciplinary teams will collaborate with experts to create innovative prototypes.
The culmination of the Circular Cities Challenge includes an inauguration event and a one-week exposition of prototypes at CosmoCaixa, Barcelona’s science museum. This exhibition will be part of the Cultural and Creative Industries Event, showcasing tangible results. A documentary capturing the creativity and dedication of participants will be produced, along with an e-book featuring circular design solutions developed during the challenge.
If you are a young creative talent based in Barcelona or internationally, within the first five years of your career, seize this unique opportunity and apply to join the Circular Cities Challenge. The program accepts up to 20 talents from Barcelona and six international talents, covering flights and accommodations for international participants. The Circular Cities Challenge awaits you!
