Fisiosmart Clinic

Intuitive to the Bone – a digitally designed physiotherapy clinic

Archiologics’ design for a physiotherapy clinic features both a smart and intuitive approach to the human body and its designed surroundings.

For the FisioSmart project, Archiologics got one seemingly standard brief: to transform a 55 square metre commercial premises in a residential Madrid into a physiotherapy clinic. This included massage rooms, space for pilates, an office complete with reception areas – all in all, what your typical physio clinic would need, right?

Except that the way to design and make this transformation happen was not necessarily typical. Despite the modest budget, it was intended to mark a next step forward for the physiotherapists at FisioSmart, after four years of working together. Archiologics teamed up with controlmad, the makers of the project, to ideate, design and finally produce designs and spaces echoing journeys of the mindful human body into healing.

The overall method used was of parametric design and CNC fabrication, which has fast-become a cost- and time-efficient formula that continuously creates new visuals abiding to the same pattern without repetitions. Take the reception areas, zones where patients would normally sit and look around the space. In transforming these areas into canyon-like spaces, patients became privy to an environment with an overall organic feel that is often soothing.

These canyons offered a space where the human bone in its complexity and texture could be embodied on an aesthetic level. Depth analysis translated the microscopic structures present in human bone into a black and white map that laid out geometries to be milled into the MDF boards. Each depth was rationalised to be read as various XYZ values for the CNC milling machine producing an array of circles that are recessed and perforated into the board.

The digital process allowed for each board to be unique and thus avoiding repetition, creating a continuous, but consistent design throughout the space. Simultaneously, the boards also serve as sound-absorbing panels and an ambient light source through the use of LED strips that were installed behind the perforations.

The totality of this is astounding, natural, creating a sublime transition for the inhabitants of the space into feeling at home within their own body, that is reflected to them in their surroundings. Both intuitive and smart.
